Embracing Innovation in Chile’s Startup Scene
Chile’s startup ecosystem has flourished over the past decade, establishing itself as a frontrunner in the region. With a blend of government initiatives and a surge of young entrepreneurs, the country has emerged as a global hotspot for tech startups, boasting a myriad of successful ventures. Among these pioneers is Fintual, founded in 2016 and operational since 2018. Fintual aims to democratize financial investment tools by leveraging technology and adopting a transparent communication approach infused with humor. By 2020, Fintual managed funds for 47 thousand clients, totaling more than 425 million USD, signifying substantial growth and necessitating expansion both in team size and physical space.
The Historic Droguett Palace: A Canvas for Innovation
The Droguett Palace, with its rich history, served as the canvas for Fintual’s new headquarters. Originally built in 1931 as an urban residence by renowned architect Sergio Larraín García-Moreno, the palace underwent various transformations over the years. From a family residence to an event venue and later an office and coworking space for innovation and entrepreneurship, the building has evolved while retaining its architectural allure.
Designing the Workspace: Creativity Amidst Constraints
Amidst the challenges posed by the global pandemic, Studio Cáceres Lazo was tasked with designing Fintual’s headquarters within the Droguett Palace. The project aimed to create a vibrant and functional workspace for 40 to 60 employees, incorporating diverse work settings and reflecting the company’s horizontal culture. The design process prioritized speed and efficiency, with the initial concept developed in just 10 days. Leveraging the palace’s existing spatial qualities, the focus was on furnishing rather than extensive intervention.
Crafting a Unique Aesthetic
With a modest budget, the design sought an elegant yet cost-effective aesthetic, blending affordability with sophistication. The use of laminated wood boards provided a warm and cohesive look, complemented by matte white desks for contrast. Anthracite black paint concealed utility networks and infrastructure, creating a visually cohesive environment. A stroke of luck was the discovery of the original terrazzo tile flooring beneath layers of covering, restored to its former glory and adding to the space’s charm.
Navigating Construction Challenges
The construction process was divided into two phases to accommodate Fintual’s immediate occupancy and ongoing work. Despite transit restrictions, lockdowns, and material shortages, the project persevered, showcasing resilience and adaptability amidst adversity. The successful completion not only provided Fintual with a dynamic workspace but also exemplified innovative design strategies for heritage buildings, celebrating the intersection of tradition and modernity.
