Bostanlı Footbridge: A Symbol of Connectivity and Leisure Studio Evren Başbuğ Architects envisioned Bostanlı Footbridge as a vital component of the 'Karşıkıyı' concept within the 'İzmirSea' coastal regeneration project. This architectural marvel serves not only as a functional connector but also as a captivating leisure spot. The footbridge spans Bostanlı Creek, seamlessly linking both sides and completing the continuous coastal promenade. Its unique design, featuring a slightly bow-shaped longitudinal section and specially crafted girder geometry, facilitates the passage of small boats underneath. Additionally, the bridge grants access to a floating pontoon nestled within the creek. Designed with the site's distinct characteristics in mind, the footbridge offers a picturesque view of the bay on one side and the city on the other. Its asymmetrical cross-section, crafted from cascading thermo-wood surfaces on a steel frame, invites users to pause and admire the scenery. Rather than being a mere passageway, this structure transcends its infrastructural role to become a public leisure destination integrated with its surroundings. Bostanlı Sunset Lounge: Embracing Nature's Beauty Situated on a west-facing coastal fragment in Karşıyaka, Bostanlı Sunset Lounge complements the footbridge with its inviting design. Consisting of cascading thermo-wood covered platforms, this urban oasis creates a serene space where visitors can bask in the beauty of the setting sun and the sea. The lounge's simplicity in surface geometry fosters a direct connection with nature, encouraging visitors to immerse themselves fully in the tranquil ambiance. Like its counterpart, the footbridge, the Sunset Lounge evokes a sense of warmth and welcome, largely influenced by the natural texture of the materials used. By reviving the tradition of sunset watching—a cherished ritual in İzmir's urban memory—the Sunset Lounge fosters community engagement and shared experiences among city residents. Embodying Urban Renewal and Community Engagement Together, Bostanlı Footbridge and Sunset Lounge epitomize the 'Karşıkıyı' proposal's vision for the Karşıyaka coastline. These installations, characterized by their natural, inclusive design, serve as 'counter-spaces,' offering respite from the bustling urban environment. Rooted in the social, geographical, and historical context of their surroundings, these structures invite visitors to embrace the concept of 'idleness' and indulge in moments of relaxation. Furthermore, they align seamlessly with İzmir's overarching vision of an 'Easy Way of Living,' as outlined by the 'İzmirSea' coastal regeneration project. In essence, Bostanlı Footbridge and Sunset Lounge not only enhance connectivity and accessibility along the coastline but also foster a sense of community and appreciation for İzmir's natural beauty.
