Conceptualization and Design
Cuervo Coffee Roasters, designed by Mutar, serves as both a coffee roasting facility and a café for patrons to enjoy a variety of coffee offerings. Originally a car repair shop located on a corner adjacent to an avenue and a street, the space features a large, open floor plan with an L-shaped layout, showcasing double-height areas on both sides.
Spatial Distribution
The layout of the space is strategically organized around two primary elements: the coffee roasting machine and the bar. The coffee roasting area is situated in the double-height space, with a portion of the ceiling designed to allow overhead light to filter through, creating a well-lit environment conducive to the roasting process. On the other hand, the coffee bar spans a length of 7 meters and serves as a focal point connecting the production area with the street. An iron window bar facilitates coffee service and interaction with customers on the sidewalk, offering flexibility with guillotine glass panes and folding doors for closure when needed.
Flexibility and Adaptability
The remainder of the space is left open and flexible, allowing for the incorporation of necessary furniture and accommodating various functions. Throughout the premises, a green stripe painted with a durable synthetic material traverses the space, offering both aesthetic appeal and practicality. In the roasting area, the green stripe transitions into a tiled surface, optimized for the specific tasks carried out in that area.
Preservation and Transformation
In homage to the space’s original function as a workshop, certain elements have been retained and repurposed. The corner gate, for example, remains intact, functioning similarly to its original purpose by opening up completely towards the sidewalk, creating a semi-covered space akin to a large gallery. Additionally, the façade of the building has been preserved to maintain the architectural integrity of the exterior while undergoing a significant transformation within.
Cuervo Coffee Roasters by Mutar exemplifies a harmonious blend of industrial heritage and contemporary design, offering a unique and inviting space for coffee enthusiasts to indulge in the art of roasting and relaxation.
