Originally designed by Walter Netsch in 1962, the library underwent a comprehensive expansion to meet the evolving needs of contemporary academia while honoring its rich architectural heritage.

Netsch’s original design, characterized by its brutalist aesthetic and introverted structure, laid the groundwork for a new era of architectural exploration. The expansion project reimagines the library as a dynamic hub, tailored to support Colorado College’s distinctive academic program, The Block. Collaborative spaces, writing centers, and state-of-the-art teaching facilities now dot the library, providing essential resources for The Block’s immersive learning experience.
Bridging Past and Present
Embracing the spirit of transformation, the design ingeniously integrates old and new elements, symbolized by a striking red “ribbon” that winds its way around the existing structure. This ribbon, reminiscent of locally mined sandstone, serves as a visual link between the original building and its contemporary expansion, culminating in a panoramic 4th-floor reading area that offers breathtaking views of the Colorado range.
