Introducing City Cemetery Presov – Svaby

The City Cemetery Presov – Svaby, designed by STOA Architekti, represents a unique approach to cemetery design, transforming it into a green oasis within the residential landscape. Departing from its traditional monofunctional role, the cemetery now serves as both a burial ground and a forest park, blending natural beauty with architectural elements.

Embracing Nature

At the heart of the cemetery’s design is a commitment to preserving and enhancing the natural character of the area. The site features a combination of high and low greenery, with spacious gravesites adorned with natural materials and greenery. The careful arrangement of grave units and the professional maintenance of public greenery contribute to the serene atmosphere of the cemetery.

Urban Integration

Situated on the southeast outskirts of the city, the cemetery seamlessly integrates into the surrounding residential areas of Solivar and Šváby. A monumental western gate serves as the main entrance, welcoming visitors to the expansive cemetery grounds. Before construction began, an archaeological survey revealed traces of Neolithic habitation, adding historical significance to the site.

Architectural Elements

Architecture plays a sculptural role in shaping the cemetery’s identity. Corten steel, exposed concrete, and wood are the dominant materials used throughout the site. Corten steel symbolizes aging on the entrance portal, while slender concrete columns form spatial landmarks rather than physical barriers. Atypically shaped elements such as benches and lighting fixtures complement the architectural concept.

Sustainability and Future Development

The cemetery’s design incorporates sustainable features such as retention tanks, rainwater drainage, and an irrigation system to ensure the efficient use of resources. As the project progresses, the planted greenery will continue to contrast with concrete surfaces, creating ever-changing scenery that evolves with the seasons. The completion of the first phase sets a clear direction for future development, ensuring the cemetery remains a vital part of the community for years to come.
