Redesigning EID Ground: Allies and Morrison's Vision

Allies and Morrison embarked on a transformative journey to reconstruct the historic EID ground in Doha, situated on a prominent site opposite the Al Koot Fort. This endeavor, nestled within the Msheireb Downtown Doha Masterplan, aimed to rejuvenate the sacred space while accommodating essential infrastructural needs.

Site Context and Design Philosophy

The EID ground spans approximately 4000sqm, positioned strategically within the urban fabric of Doha. Situated atop a central cooling plant, the reconstruction project demanded meticulous integration of below-ground infrastructure with above-ground amenities. Allies and Morrison’s design ethos centered on harmonizing site geometries with the sacred orientation of the prayer ground.

Architectural Features and Amenities

The reconstructed ground features a perfectly level platform, subtly elevated above the sloping terrain, encapsulating the essence of sacred geometry. This pristine rectangular space, nestled within the irregular site boundary, serves as the focal point of the design. Surrounding this sacred ground are interstitial spaces housing essential infrastructure and amenities, including screening walls, sun screens, public conveniences, and drinking fountains.

Integration of Sacred Geometry

The design concept prioritizes the alignment and orientation of the prayer ground, ensuring adherence to sacred principles. Retractable shading devices are strategically positioned to provide protection for worshippers, enhancing comfort and facilitating uninterrupted prayer experiences.

Contextual Sensitivity and Sustainability

Allies and Morrison’s approach emphasizes contextual sensitivity and sustainability, seamlessly blending tradition with modernity. The reconstruction not only preserves the historic significance of the EID ground but also addresses contemporary needs through thoughtful integration of amenities and infrastructure.

Conclusion

The reconstruction of the EID ground by Allies and Morrison represents a harmonious fusion of architectural excellence and cultural sensitivity. By honoring sacred geometries and embracing contextual nuances, the design pays homage to tradition while catering to the evolving needs of the community. The revitalized EID ground stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Islamic architecture and the transformative power of thoughtful design.
