Nita Architects embarked on a monumental project to design the Expo 2016 Antalya Observation Tower, aiming to create an iconic structure that symbolizes both the event and the city of Antalya.
Embracing Antalya’s Charm
Situated at the heart of the Mediterranean, Antalya boasts a rich historical heritage and breathtaking natural beauty. With its favorable climate and abundant sunshine, the city has emerged as a vibrant tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the globe.
A Tribute to Expo 2016 Antalya
The Expo 2016 Antalya, themed “Flowers and Children” with the motto “A green life for future generations,” inspired the design of the observation tower. Spanning an area of 1,100,000 square meters, the event sought an iconic structure to represent its vision. Nita Architects rose to the challenge by envisioning a tower that harmonizes with the event’s theme and the city’s essence.
Conceptualization and Execution
The initial idea revolved around creating a symbolic tower that embodies the spirit of “Flowers and Children” while paying homage to Antalya’s heritage. The tower features a circular view deck positioned 101 meters above ground level, offering visitors a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the Expo site and Antalya’s scenic beauty.
Functional Design Elements
The tower’s design seamlessly integrates form and function. Three vertical circulations, symbolizing the petals of a flower, lead to the panoramic elevator, fire exit, and service elevator. The tower’s structure, reminiscent of Antalya’s iconic Hadrian’s Gate, serves as a testament to the city’s rich history and cultural significance.
Sustainable Features
Incorporating sustainable design principles, the tower features a convex formation on the upper level facade to control solar heat and provide shade. Perforated aluminum grids on the facade regulate sunlight penetration while maintaining visual transparency. The tower’s open and closed view decks cater to various weather conditions, ensuring an optimal experience for visitors year-round.
