The site’s unique challenge lies in the presence of the C-Train, Calgary’s Light Rail Transit, which traverses the area from north to south-west. Rather than viewing this infrastructure as a hindrance, the project reimagines it as an opportunity to enhance the urban experience. By transforming transit functions into social spaces, C-Square Plaza seeks to reshape the urban landscape and offer distinctive spatial encounters.
Reimagining Infrastructure: Transforming Transit into Social Exchange
Central to the design philosophy is the conversion of the C-Train infrastructure into a catalyst for public engagement. A novel approach involves the installation of perforated aluminum fins, strategically positioned to capture and reflect light, creating a dynamic interplay with the surrounding environment. These fins not only frame connections to and from the train but also infuse the public space with the energy of transit, effectively turning a site constraint into an asset.
Crafting a Dynamic Ground-Plane: Adaptable Spaces for Community Interaction
Another key aspect of the project is the creation of a versatile ground-plane that unifies the site while accommodating various activities. Tailored transformations anticipate diverse modes of engagement, ensuring the flexibility needed for the public realm to evolve. For instance, folds along the edges of the train tracks define an amenity spine, while shifted plates along the east side of the public space form a permeable and inviting edge.
