ASKA, an architectural firm, breathes new life into Stockholm’s MBS Beauty Clinic, infusing the iconic Scandinavian design era with a contemporary twist. Paying homage to the building’s 1930s architecture, ASKA reimagines the essence of “Scandinavian modern style,” known as “Funkis,” within a 70 m2 ground floor space.

Modern Nostalgia

The interior of MBS Beauty Clinic exudes a sense of “modern nostalgia,” blending familiar design elements with unexpected touches. This juxtaposition creates an atmosphere that feels both familiar and fresh, effortlessly combining rigidity with playfulness.

Materials and Accents

The salon’s interior showcases quintessential Funkis materials, including white, rounded Alvar Aalto-inspired tiles, oak veneer, compact laminate, and textured glass. Details like nickel-plated brass handles, linen fabrics, and Swedish Ekeberg marble-inspired porcelain floor tiles elevate the space, infusing it with elegance and exclusivity. Vibrant light blue and dark blue accents inject a modern, bold flair into the design.

Elevating Tradition

ASKA co-founder Polina Sandström explains, “We saw potential in adding luxury, softness, and a young vibe to this simple, strict, and socialistic style. Believing that something new and unique could rise from the merge.”

Bespoke Design

To achieve a conceptually cohesive result, ASKA designs custom furniture pieces tailored to the clinic’s aesthetic. Cream-colored lounge tables and nail manicure stations seamlessly blend into the environment, while the reception desk commands attention with its size and intricate detailing.

Harmonious Integration

Each object within the clinic is meticulously crafted to complement the overall architecture. Design elements such as pseudo three arches are echoed in table-tops, while foot panels seamlessly merge with product shelves. The reception desk’s dark blue grout harmonizes with the MBS logo sign, creating a cohesive visual narrative.

Creating Memorable Experiences

ASKA co-founder Madeleine Klingspor emphasizes, “By interpreting the same design elements in different ways, we believe we can create visual interest while keeping a coherent and clear impression of the space. The goal is to create a specific and memorable experience.”

Through meticulous attention to detail and a thoughtful blend of tradition and innovation, MBS Beauty Clinic emerges as a vibrant testament to the enduring allure of Scandinavian design.
