Nestled in the picturesque Gruyère valley, the former guesthouse “Les Préalpes” bears witness to a rich history. Originally serving as both a boarding house and a dairy factory, it later evolved into a vibrant social hub. Its significance within the village fabric is undeniable, characterized by its strategic location, thoughtful orientation, and distinctive architectural features—crafted ribbons of glazed openings, wooden paneling, and charming balconies.

Evolution and Renovation

Over time, the guesthouse underwent numerous transformations, with extensions altering its original symmetrical layout to accommodate a spacious dining hall. After a period of closure, discussions surrounding its renovation commenced in 2018. From 2019 to 2021, the guesthouse underwent a remarkable metamorphosis, emerging as three modern apartments and a healthcare center, all while preserving its intrinsic social essence.

Reclaiming Wholeness

The restoration efforts required a comprehensive approach to revitalize the building’s integrity. Drawing inspiration from its 1925 origins, interventions focused on restoring the rhythm and crafted details of its facade. Interior reconfigurations, including relocating the staircase, aimed to optimize space utilization while retaining the original layout—a central corridor flanked by rooms, culminating in living spaces affording breathtaking views of the Alps. A new dormer in the attic enhances symmetry and natural light, honoring the building’s heritage while embracing contemporary needs.

Sustainability and Preservation

Incorporating sustainable elements was paramount to the renovation project. Solar panels seamlessly integrated into the copper roof harness renewable energy, while meticulous insulation upgrades ensure compliance with modern standards. The preservation of historical elements, such as the original entrance and stone stairs, serves as a poignant reminder of the guesthouse’s storied past. Two years of painstaking craftsmanship have breathed new life into this century-old treasure, ensuring its legacy endures for generations to come.
