The Bonteheuwel Town Centre Upgrade aimed to revitalize Freedom Square, transforming it into a versatile and inclusive space that caters to the community’s diverse needs. This ambitious project had several key objectives:

Creating Community Spaces

One of the primary goals was to establish a comfortable and secure gathering space where residents could engage in various activities. The design focused on providing amenities for markets, events, performances, playgrounds, and memory preservation, fostering a sense of community cohesion.

Enhancing Accessibility and Convenience

Improving entrances, exits, routes, and parking areas was essential to ensure accessibility and convenience for all community members. The upgraded infrastructure aimed to make the town centre more navigable and user-friendly, encouraging increased foot traffic and engagement.

Preserving Heritage and Incorporating Sustainability

The project sought to integrate historical elements like the Old Library Staircase and existing trees into the redesigned space. Additionally, sustainable landscaping practices were employed, with indigenous trees and plants used to create microclimates and enhance the environment’s biodiversity.

Collaborative Design Process

The initial concept and early design stages were led by Tarna Klitzner Landscape Architects, with further development and construction oversight carried out by Terra+ Landscape Architects. Throughout the process, there were iterations and adjustments to ensure a cohesive design language and seamless integration of various features.

Embracing Art and Community Engagement

Art played a pivotal role in shaping the project’s identity, with local artist Lorenzo Nassimbeni leading workshops to create art pieces embedded in the flooring of the central gathering space. These artistic elements, along with murals and painted stepping stones, added vibrancy and character to the town centre, reflecting the community’s spirit and culture.

The Bonteheuwel Town Centre Upgrade stands as a testament to the power of collaborative design, community engagement, and sustainable development in revitalizing urban spaces and fostering social inclusion.
