Introduction to the Concept

The project at Stora Torget, conceptualized as “guldkant” (gilt edge), aims to transform this location into a vibrant gathering place. Utilizing the square’s cornered and quadrangular design, the project emphasizes its role as the heart of the city.

Versatile and Open Space

The redesign of Stora Torget focuses on creating an open and adaptable space suitable for various activities, including art exhibitions, markets, outdoor dining, and temporary events. This flexibility is intended to foster public engagement and community interactions.

Enhancing Public Life

Furnished Frame

A key feature of the redesign is a furnished frame equipped with trees, seating areas, lighting poles, and flower urns. This frame is designed to create a welcoming environment for rest and social gatherings. The seating zone features a mosaic of red, black, and light granite, providing an aesthetic touch and a sense of care.

Central Features

The square includes several distinctive elements: a stone with a water feature that doubles as a seating area or stage when the water is off, and a bronze sculpture in the southwest corner. The historic candelabra, previously located in the center, has been repositioned to the northeast corner following a public vote, allowing for closer interaction.

Seasonal Beauty and Comfort

The addition of new cherry trees introduces seasonal variations, offering blossoms in the spring, vibrant colors in the autumn, and festive lights during winter. The square is equipped with various seating options, including sofas, armchairs, and larger furniture pieces that encourage social interaction.

Enhanced Lighting and Accessibility

Improved Lighting

New lighting installations are proposed to illuminate the square in the evening, enhancing comfort and safety. Eight new masts within the furnished frame will light up the area and are equipped with speakers and electrical outlets to facilitate events. Special lighting effects will mark holidays, and the square’s facades will feature uniform lanterns to create atmosphere and character.

Ground and Accessibility Improvements

The existing granite paving will be reused and rearranged into a new pattern, complemented by additional stonework. The square will also receive new ground heating, and all entrances will be reviewed to improve accessibility. The street will be paved with cobblestones, similar to neighboring streets, and the central square’s asphalt will be removed.

Conclusion

The redesign of Stora Torget by Karavan Landskapsarkitekter aims to revitalize the square, making it a dynamic and inviting public space. By incorporating flexible design elements, seasonal beauty, and improved lighting, the project ensures that Stora Torget will serve as a central hub for community life and activities.
